At Sunrise Aviation, our experience makes the difference. Chief Pilot Devon Dorato has over 20 years’ experience in professional aviation. In fact, it’s been a lifelong passion. Devon started flying at age fourteen and soloed an aircraft at age sixteen. He now has over 4,000 hour’s total time including Part 135 experience and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Central Michigan University. In addition to his extensive aviation experience, Devon is a highly skilled instructor pilot with a true gift for imparting the all-important principles of sound airmanship and professionalism to our student pilots. Devon is a TSA School Official for the Alien Flight Student Program and primary official for international student visas issued under the United States Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS).
William WalkerChief Flight Instructor
Heading up our satellite facility at Jacksonville’s historic Cecil Field is Billy Walker, a retired United States Naval aviator with over 7,000 flight hours in a wide variety of military and civilian aircraft. During his impressive military career, Billy flew the Lockheed P-3 Orion, the U.S. Navy’s primary anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft. In addition, during Operation Enduring Freedom, Billy was deployed overseas to Afghanistan and Eastern Africa where he logged 800 combat hours and served as a flight deck officer onboard a nuclear aircraft carrier. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Billy has extensive experience teaching both military and civilian pilots including international clients from many countries. As a testament to his dedication to the highest principles of airmanship, while in the Navy, Billy was named “Instructor Pilot of the Year” while serving our nation at Naval Air Station Pensacola – and he graduated first in his class during BE-200 and T-34 training! Billy Walker is the Chief Instructor Pilot, Manager, and Check Airman for all courses of instruction. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Troy State University.
William OrpinukAssistant Chief Flight Instructor
When it comes to professional flight training, Captain Bill Orpinuk sets the gold standard of excellence. Bill has been flying for over 20 years and has logged an impressive 13,000+ flight hours in a wide variety of aircraft, including over 2,000 hours of dual instruction given in multi-engine airplanes. He has served as Chief Flight Instructor for an international flight training school and has extensive experience in the management of flight school operations and student services. As a career CFI, Bill brings a wealth of practical flying experience, coupled with a true passion for quality flight instruction that makes our graduates among the best trained and most sought after professional pilots in the global aviation community.
Patrick W. MurphyGeneral Manager
In 1967 at age 13, Patrick Murphy got his first airplane ride in a V-tail Bonanza on a grass runway that now is home to a Walmart. That flight sparked his second career. After 13 years teaching public administration at the University of Southern California, he found his true calling. Capt. Murphy most recently was General Manager at the second largest flying school in India. Prior to spending 3 years in India, Capt. Murphy was Director of Training at Sunrise Aviation from 2009 to 2014. Capt. Murphy has extensive experience in international flight training including overseas experience in China, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, in addition to India. His first student was an 18 year old lady from Japan learning to fly in Southern California. Capt. Murphy has 38 years of aviation experience including nearly 10,000 hours of logged flight time. Hundreds of his flight students have gone on to finish their professional pilot training and are now flying for airlines all over the world. Capt. Murphy has experience at several aviation universities in the USA and has over 20 years of experience as a university teacher. Capt. Murphy was a pilot for a USA regional airline and is still an active pilot and flight instructor.
Pia McDonald Aviation English
Pia McDonald has been teaching English including aviation English for more than 20 years in colleges and flight schools both in the USA and abroad. She has taught pilots and crewmembers who are now flying for many major international airlines. Under contract with the US Navy, she has taught English to international military pilots. At Sunrise Aviation, Ms. McDonald does aviation English assessments and tutors students working toward the Private Pilot License and the Instrument Rating. She has lengthy experience with students doing commercial pilot training from Saudi Arabia, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and many other countries. Pia is an expert on ICAO standards for radiotelephony communications in the English language.
Beth NorvellAdministrative Assistant
Beth comes to us with over 20 years of experience in both the public and private sector including previous experience in sales and marketing. Her skills and experience in scheduling, coordination, and communication will be valuable assets for the Sunrise team. Beth’s attention to detail along with her outgoing personality will be noticed by both the current students and prospective ones.
Beth developed a deep passion for aviation by having the opportunity to fly in small airplanes and commercial aircraft throughout her spare time. “I’ve been bitten by the flying bug since my first ride” she exclaimed. “I am extremely happy to be a part of Sunrise Aviation and to be a part of the flying industry. For me, this is a dream come true.”
RINCHEN DOLMACountry Coordinator, India
Rinchen has over 20 years of experience in General Management, Operations Management, Administration, Training & Development and Customer Relationship Management within the Hospitality and Aviation Industry.
Her experience includes a diverse background throughout multiple industries and capacities with more than 10 years in Aviation In-flight Services with Air India Limited and another 11 years in the Aviation Training and Tourism sector including positions as General Manager Member Relations and Business Development Manager. She most recently was the Manager of Customer Services and Facilities at CAE OAA’s National Flying Training Institute Pvt. Ltd. and has been involved for many years with IndiGo’s Cadet Pilot Programme at NFTI. Her experience at flying schools, in customer service, and as part of an airline crew will be valuable additions to the team at Sunrise!
